In this article we will talk about some tips to optimize efficiency within our workshop, through organization.

Everyday life in a workshop is really hard. In fact, a thousand unforeseen events can hinder the ordinary management of a workshop, but this does not mean that efficiency must suffer as a result.

The workshop can be compared to an industry that needs to be optimized in every single area. In fact, there are no distinctions, in terms of organization, between large companies and small companies. The only differences are fundamentally linked to the size of the people who are part of a given unit.

One of the main purposes of the workshop owners is to increase productivity, keeping customers and orders stable.

Optimized management, therefore, resides within this process, precisely to increase productivity in a stable way. Beware, however, that sometimes the mechanics may not be entirely efficient, and may lose their bearings in certain situations.

In the absence of planning and organization of the work environment as well, there is in fact a loss of efficiency of individual people. The direct consequence is an increase in service delivery times, and therefore a decrease in profit margins.

How to do then?

We are now introducing a series of tips to increase efficiency and improve the areas of refinement of your workshop.

The first piece of advice we want to give in terms of organization is to have an inspection area. This is a simple and in some respects trivial advice, but it should not be underestimated. If we have an inspection area, this is how the mechanic can quickly understand his task and priorities for intervention. In fact, if he sees a car inside this area, he immediately perceives that there is an immediate need for intervention.

However, if you do not have enough space to carry out this project, you can try to optimize the position, possibly moving mobile objects. Alternatively, parking space doublers can be used, via a car lift to have two vehicles in the same area.

The second piece of advice we want to give is to optimize spaces precisely to maximize the production process. Through strategic configurations of tools, but also of equipment, the latter can be positioned in an optimal way, reducing waste and also maximizing the performance of the individual mechanic.

The third tip is to label all objects. Whatever the object contained in your workshop, it must have very clear labels, which immediately make the individual mechanic understand the contents.

For example, we are talking about boxes, or even drawers which can contain certain tools. All this serves to have a good idea of where the equipment, or documents, is located in zero time.

This method is really important and it too is very easy to do. The major car manufacturers, as well as the largest production laboratories, have always used this method to reduce product research times.

Clearly order is needed to carry out this procedure, but it is really fundamental and with a little exercise, everything will be positioned in the best way. Some mechanics could be careless and deposit the items in the wrong places.

With a little practice and some possible recall of the individual mechanic, situations of excellent production can gradually be added.

The fourth piece of advice we want to include in this article is the improvement of internal processes. To increase productivity, a key factor is the optimized management of internal processes.

In other words, everyone must know who does what. Companies, or workshops, which do not have an efficient activity execution plan, can have serious problems in terms of management.

All this will therefore inevitably lead to a loss of profit and also to a stagnation of the workshop.

The direct and indirect consequences are a loss of confidence on the part of the mechanics and a decrease in the quality of the service provided to the customer.

In this case, the owner of the workshop has a fundamental role, as he dictates times and defines internal processes within his own business.

The last piece of advice we want to include is the elimination of waste. When we talk about waste, we're not just talking about the product we use to repair. We are also referring to time, which is a key factor in billing as much as possible.

In fact, the elimination of waste grips various entrepreneurs of any dress and in any sector. Having a well-defined process, but also checklists to keep everything under control, allows you to reduce waste as much as possible.

The presence of a check list, detailed for each type of intervention, allows the individual mechanic to have everything under control. On the other hand, the one who manages the management control of the workshop will also have the numbers under control.

We never leave anything unmanaged, starting from the single processing but also continuing on a concept of optimization of raw materials and resources.

Not knowing how much time was used to carry out a particular process. it is absolutely impossible. The cost of labour, in fact, is something that must clearly emerge within the workshop and is inevitable.

On this aspect, we have just written an article that we invite you to read. CLICK HERE

In any case, having the numbers under control and eliminating waste are two fundamental aspects that cannot be overlooked by the owner of a workshop.

By combining these two aspects with the other tips that we have included in this article, you will be able to have the most optimal management of your workshop.
