From next year the European Union will make mandatory the universal speed limiter managed by the control units. Let's find out more information together.
Very often, car manufacturers have fun developing high-performance cars. You always try to get 0-100km acceleration times that are creepy on your back.
However, we must think that cars are used for everyday life within cities and highways. In some cases, car manufacturers are starting to drastically cut the maximum speed limit up to 180 km per hour. Volvo has always been attentive to this aspect and is in fact one of the very few that has made this decision so far.
However, we must remember that from 6 July 2022 the European Union will make a speed limiter mandatory on all new generation cars. The appearance will be controlled by the control unit and will allow you to cut the maximum speed in any situation.
Technically we are talking about Intelligent Speed Assistance.
It is an interesting and ingenious system that will allow it to work fully automatically thanks to the simultaneous use of GPS and on-board cameras. In fact, the on-board cameras will be able to detect the maximum speeds that the car can perform.
In this way it will be possible to cut the maximum speed that the car can reach. According to some rumors, however, it seems that the electronics will not be completely in control of this decision, at first, but visual and tactile acoustic alarms will be sent to the driver who can decide whether to intervene or not.
In fact, it seems that at first the system can also be deactivated in order to combat any malfunctioning situations.
It is therefore a system that will have to fill a security gap that has recently been noticed with the increase in car performance. In the future, therefore, we could have control units that will automatically decide the maximum speed that a car can travel within a city.
We are therefore talking about an intermediate level between autonomous driving and driving still managed by man. It is not known exactly when there will be the total switch of a completely autonomous driving, but this decision will certainly bring an interesting innovation and an interesting improvement in terms of road safety.
Obviously, this aspect can only be applied to the new generation car and not the current ones. In fact, an aftermarket integration of this aspect is not foreseen and therefore the cars currently in circulation will not be able to use this technology.
